Licensed to Sell: Seven Decades of James Bond Poster Design
Few film series have built a visual language as recognisable as James Bond. The dinner jacket, gun, women, gadgets and 007 mark became ingredients artists could rearrange without losing the identity of the series.
The Bond formula
Early campaigns established the balance between sophistication, glamour and danger. Later posters repeatedly returned to it while changing illustration style, composition and scale.
Why international posters are interesting
The same film could appear differently in Britain, France, Germany or the United States. Formats changed, artwork was rearranged and local distributors sometimes emphasised different elements. Country and format are therefore essential parts of a Bond poster's identity.
Artwork is only half the story
Famous Bond imagery has been reproduced extensively. A period theatrical poster should be identified by release, territory, format, dimensions, credits and printing rather than artwork alone. See how we check authenticity and our terminology guide.
Collect the design, film or era?
Some collectors want one poster for every Bond actor; others focus on a particular illustrator, country or film. We prefer starting with the image you actually want on the wall and learning the edition from there.
