Andy Warhol understood advertising, celebrity and repetition better than almost anyone, which makes posters a particularly natural part of his wider visual world. Across exhibitions, film, music, commercial commissions and cultural events, his imagery appeared on posters throughout his career and has continued to appear on institutional exhibition material since.

That also means dates need careful attention. A poster using a Warhol image is not automatically a poster printed during Warhol's lifetime, and an exhibition poster is not the same thing as a signed or editioned Warhol print. We describe the physical poster itself — its date, exhibition or campaign, format and condition — rather than relying on the familiarity of the artwork.
