There is no single movie poster size. The format depends on the country and the period the poster was printed for. The American one-sheet measures roughly 27 × 41 inches before the mid-1980s and 27 × 40 inches afterwards; the British quad is 30 × 40 inches and landscape; the French grande is 47 × 63 inches. The table below covers the cinema formats you are most likely to encounter.

Dimensions vary slightly with trimming, production tolerances and period practice, so treat measurements as typical rather than as an authentication test on their own.

Movie poster sizes at a glance

Standard original cinema poster formats. Measurements are typical for the format and period.
Format Inches Centimetres Orientation Notes
US One-Sheet 27 × 41 (pre-mid-1980s)
27 × 40 (mid-1980s on)
69 × 104
69 × 102
Portrait The format most people picture. The height changed by an inch when the industry standardised. Older examples usually folded, later ones often rolled.
US Half-Sheet 22 × 28 56 × 71 Landscape Card stock, for cinema display. Artwork can differ substantially from the one-sheet.
US Insert 14 × 36 36 × 91 Portrait Tall and narrow, usually on heavier stock. Associated with earlier cinema advertising.
US Three-Sheet 41 × 81 104 × 206 Portrait Large theatrical format. Earlier examples can be multi-panel.
US Six-Sheet 81 × 81 206 × 206 Square Almost seven feet each way — built to dominate a lobby, not to sit in a frame.
UK Quad 30 × 40 76 × 102 Landscape The classic British cinema format. Its horizontal shape often required completely different artwork from the US campaign.
UK Double Crown 20 × 30 51 × 76 Portrait Versatile British format used across film, travel and advertising.
UK Double Royal 25 × 40 64 × 102 Portrait Tall British format used for film and general advertising; seen less often than the quad.
French Grande 47 × 63 120 × 160 Portrait The classic large French cinema poster. Visually spectacular, and usually folded for distribution.
French Moyenne 23 × 32 58 × 81 Portrait Roughly half the area of a grande — easier to display without losing French scale.
French Petite 15 × 21 38 × 53 Portrait The smallest of the three standard French sizes and the easiest to live with.
Italian Locandina 13 × 27 33 × 70 Portrait Tall, narrow and compact by Italian standards. Often beautifully illustrated.
Italian Due Foglio 39 × 55 100 × 140 Portrait A major Italian theatrical format with generous space for illustrated artwork.
Italian Quattro Fogli 55 × 78 140 × 200 Portrait Over four and a half feet tall. Extraordinary framed, but it needs serious wall space.
Lobby Card 14 × 11 36 × 28 Landscape Usually issued in sets combining a title card with scene cards — a distinct format, not a miniature one-sheet.

Lobby cards, window cards and front-of-house cards are genuine original cinema material without being conventional wall posters. They are collected in their own right, and often in sets.

US one-sheet

The classic American one-sheet was traditionally around 27 × 41 inches. During the later twentieth century the standard shifted towards approximately 27 × 40 inches. Older examples were commonly distributed folded; later theatrical posters increasingly appear rolled.

UK quad

The British quad is approximately 30 × 40 inches and, crucially, horizontal. That landscape format encouraged British designers to rethink artwork created for vertical American campaigns rather than simply shrinking it.

French formats

French theatrical posters exist in three standard sizes — grande, moyenne and petite. The grande, at roughly 47 × 63 inches, is dramatically larger than a US one-sheet or a UK quad, and grandes were usually folded for distribution. Always check exact measurements rather than relying on “French poster” as a complete description.

Italian and other international formats

Italian cinema posters run from the compact locandina up to the quattro fogli, which dwarfs almost everything else. Japan, Germany, Australia, Poland and many other territories developed their own standard sizes and campaign material, and artwork can change completely between countries.

This is exactly why dimensions are not a universal pass-or-fail authenticity test. The right question is whether the measurements make sense for the country, date, printer and specific issue being assessed.

Why the same film can have different artwork

International distributors did not always reuse the American campaign. Local artists, printers and distributors reinterpreted films for their own audiences. One title may exist as a vertical American one-sheet, a horizontal British quad, an enormous French grande and a richly illustrated Italian poster — each with a completely different visual personality.

Folded, rolled or flat?

Format and period often explain how a poster was originally supplied. Many older theatrical posters were folded as standard, so a fold is not evidence of mistreatment — it may be exactly how the distributor sent it to the cinema. Others were issued rolled or stored flat, and some folded posters have since been linen backed so the folds sit flat.

Framing and display

Format determines how straightforward a poster will be to frame. Standard sizes such as the one-sheet and quad are well served by made-to-measure framing; larger formats such as the French grande and Italian quattro fogli need more wall space and more careful handling. See our framing guide for conservation framing options.
