Why Original Posters Are More Than Decoration
A poster can make a room look better. That is reason enough to hang one. But an original poster also has something a new decorative print cannot: it was part of the thing it advertised.
It may have promoted a cinema release, hung in a station, announced an exhibition or been issued by a record company. The physical sheet carries that history.
Posters were designed for public life
Unlike art created primarily for private ownership, commercial posters had a job. They had seconds to catch somebody's eye and communicate an idea at scale. That pressure produced some extraordinary graphic design.
The physical object matters
Period printing, paper, dimensions, folds and small signs of use can tell you how a poster was made and handled. They should be understood rather than artificially romanticised.

They connect different histories
A movie poster can belong to cinema and illustration history. A TWA poster connects graphic design with the jet age. A concert poster can document music, photography and a particular cultural moment.
A great example
Richard Avedon's 1968 John Lennon poster is simultaneously music memorabilia, photography and graphic culture. Its appeal does not depend on pretending it is a conventional fine-art print.
Original does not mean guaranteed value
Some posters are rare and highly sought after; others are plentiful. Markets change. We would rather explain what actually affects value than promise appreciation.
They are meant to be lived with
Good conservation does not mean hiding posters away. Appropriate framing and sensible light levels allow original paper to be enjoyed while reducing avoidable damage. See our framing guide.
Ultimately, the best originals work twice: first as powerful images, and then again when you learn the history of the object itself. That second layer is what keeps us interested.
