Crimson Tide

Released in 1995, "Crimson Tide" is a tense submarine thriller directed by Tony Scott and starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, George Dzundza and Viggo Mortensen. Set aboard the nuclear submarine USS Alabama during a political crisis in Russia, the story centres on a bitter clash between its commanding officer and executive officer after a partially received launch order raises the possibility of nuclear war.

Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the film became one of the defining military thrillers of the 1990s, admired for its tightly controlled suspense, forceful performances and Hans Zimmer score. It received three Academy Award nominations, including recognition for editing and sound, and remains especially celebrated for the charged confrontation between Washington and Hackman.
