Released in 1982, "Missing" is a political drama directed by Costa-Gavras and starring Jack Lemmon, Sissy Spacek, John Shea and Melanie Mayron. Inspired by the disappearance of American journalist Charles Horman after the 1973 Chilean coup, the film follows Horman’s conservative father and his daughter-in-law as they search for him and gradually confront the possibility that officials know more than they admit.
The film shared the Palme d’Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while Lemmon and Spacek received Oscar nominations for their performances. Its tense investigation of state power, political violence and personal responsibility has helped "Missing" endure as one of Costa-Gavras’s most important English-language films.
