Released in 1957, "Operation Mad Ball" is a military comedy directed by Richard Quine and starring Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs, Kathryn Grant, Arthur O’Connell and Mickey Rooney. Set at an American military hospital in post-war France, the story follows Private Hogan as he secretly organises an enlisted men’s dance while repeatedly outmanoeuvring a regulation-obsessed captain determined to stop it.
Written by Blake Edwards, Jed Harris and Arthur Carter, the film became a lively showcase for Lemmon’s gift for fast-paced comedy and for Kovacs’ dry, eccentric screen presence. Its ensemble of familiar character actors and escalating series of schemes have helped it remain a well-regarded example of 1950s service comedy, anticipating later military farces built around clashes between authority and ingenuity.
This original US one-sheet poster was issued for the film’s original 1957 theatrical release by Columbia Pictures.
