The Living Desert

First released in 1953, "The Living Desert" is a pioneering Walt Disney nature documentary directed by James Algar and the first feature-length entry in the studio’s celebrated True-Life Adventures series. Filmed across the deserts of the American Southwest, it reveals the hidden lives of rattlesnakes, roadrunners, scorpions, desert tortoises and many other creatures adapted to an unforgiving landscape.

The film was a major commercial and critical success and won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Its mixture of exceptional wildlife photography, dramatic storytelling and occasional humour helped establish a new model for theatrical nature filmmaking and also marked the first release handled by Disney’s own Buena Vista distribution company.

This original US one-sheet was issued for the film’s 1964 theatrical re-release. The vibrant wildlife artwork reflects the documentary’s sense of discovery and spectacle, and the poster is presented in Very Good condition as an authentic collectible connected to a landmark in natural-history cinema.
