Hockney posters are a collecting area we keep coming back to because there is simply so much good material.
David Hockney’s career ran for more than six decades, moving through painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, stage design and digital work. That constant experimentation produced an equally rich trail of exhibitions at galleries and museums around the world, and with them a huge variety of original promotional posters.
Moving Through a Career, Exhibition by Exhibition
Some use the swimming-pool and California imagery everybody recognises. Others are portraits, drawings, landscapes, photographic work or much quieter images. Collecting the posters is almost a way of moving through Hockney’s career exhibition by exhibition rather than trying to reduce him to A Bigger Splash.
What we like is the accessibility of it. An original exhibition poster was not pretending to be the painting on the wall; it had a practical job to do — announce the show, give the dates, get people through the door. Decades later, that information is part of its charm rather than something we want cropped away.
Hockney died in June 2026, aged 88, leaving an enormous body of work and an unusually well-documented exhibition history. For collectors, that makes accurate dates and institutions especially useful: there is usually a real event behind the sheet that can be researched.
