Michael Caine takes centre stage in this original 1966 British poster for Alfie. The jaunty lettering and portrait-led design catch the confidence of his character, while the film beneath the surface offers a much sharper look at the consequences of his carefree life. It is a brilliant piece of British cinema from the heart of the swinging sixties.
Directed by Lewis Gilbert and adapted from Bill Naughton’s play, Alfie helped establish Caine as one of the defining actors of his generation. Its direct-to-camera storytelling and Sonny Rollins score give the film a distinctive rhythm, balancing humour with an increasingly poignant portrait of loneliness. The poster captures the swagger that makes that change of mood so effective.
