This original 1988 poster from the National Gallery of Art in Washington features Wassily Kandinsky's 1913 painting "Improvisation 31 (Sea Battle)". Filled with sweeping lines, vivid colour, and dynamic abstract forms, the image transforms the drama and movement of a naval battle into an expressive composition that reflects Kandinsky's pioneering move towards abstraction.
Wassily Kandinsky was a pioneer of abstract art whose radical use of colour, line, and form helped transform twentieth-century painting and profoundly influence the development of modern art.
