Released in 1964, "Bedtime Story" is a comedy directed by Ralph Levy and starring Marlon Brando, David Niven and Shirley Jones. Set on the French Riviera, the story pits polished confidence trickster Lawrence Jameson against brash American hustler Freddy Benson, with the two men competing to prove who can successfully swindle a wealthy young visitor.
The film offered Brando an uncommon opportunity to display his comic ability opposite the effortlessly urbane Niven. Its central premise proved remarkably durable: it was remade as "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" in 1988 and again as "The Hustle" in 2019, while the later version also inspired a Broadway musical. This continuing afterlife has made the original an important foundation for one of cinema’s best-known con-artist comedies.
