Founded in 1975, the Deauville American Film Festival brought contemporary American cinema to the Normandy coast and became an important meeting point for film-makers and audiences. This original 1987 festival poster features the colourful design by Ph. Bonnard, combining a stylised figure, film imagery and the American flag.
The coastal setting gives Deauville a character quite different from a city cinema festival, with the event bringing screen culture into the resort's atmosphere of seaside holidays and grand hotels. The poster's playful mixture of national symbols and film imagery makes a cheerful celebration of that meeting between America and France.
