This original 1986 poster from the National Gallery of Art in Washington features Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 1879 painting "Oarsmen at Chatou". Depicting rowers relaxing beside the Seine in vibrant colour and loose, luminous brushwork, the image captures Renoir's fascination with leisure, light, and modern life in late nineteenth-century France. The poster celebrates one of Impressionism's great masters through a quintessential scene of Parisian life along the river in their permanent collection.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading figure of Impressionism, celebrated for his radiant use of colour and light and his joyful depictions of modern life, leisure, and society in nineteenth-century France.
