Released in 1940, "Swiss Family Robinson" is an adventure drama directed by Edward Ludwig and starring Thomas Mitchell, Edna Best, Freddie Bartholomew, Terry Kilburn and Tim Holt. Based on Johann David Wyss’s classic novel, it follows a family seeking a simpler life who become shipwrecked and must build a new home, find food and defend themselves on a remote island.
The RKO production was the first feature-length screen adaptation of the enduring story and featured an uncredited narration by Orson Welles, marking his earliest feature-film performance. Its combination of family drama, survival adventure and literary adaptation later influenced Walt Disney’s celebrated 1960 version, giving this earlier film a notable place in the screen history of the Robinson family.
This original US one-sheet poster was issued for the film’s original 1940 theatrical release by RKO Radio Pictures.
