In his 1984 design for Willi’s Wine Bar, Alberto Bali turns a line of wine bottles into a wonderfully graphic portrait of Willi’s Wine Bar. Rich black shapes, warm gold labels and a splash of red lettering make this lithographic poster a lovely celebration of one of Paris’s best-loved wine addresses. Its playful composition feels perfectly at home in a kitchen, dining room or anywhere a good bottle is appreciated.
Founded by Mark Williamson in 1980, Willi’s became known for commissioning artists to interpret its world of wine. Bali’s background in architecture and design comes through in the confident arrangement of shapes and lettering, giving everyday bottles a sculptural presence. The result is a design with all the convivial character of the bar itself.
