This colourful 1991 screenprinted reproduction features Henri Matisse's Pierrot's Funeral from his celebrated Jazz compositions. The theatrical scene combines bright colour and simplified shapes, showing the expressive possibilities of the paper cut-outs that became such an important part of his later work. This is a later poster edition, rather than a leaf from the original Jazz portfolio.
Born in 1869, Henri Matisse became one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Known for his wonderful use of colour, expressive drawing and later paper cut-outs, his work helped transform the way modern artists approached painting and composition.
