Created for Picasso’s 1972 exhibition at Pace Gallery in Columbus, Ohio, this lithographic poster features his lively reworking of Manet’s famous Luncheon on the Grass. The familiar outdoor gathering becomes a bold arrangement of figures, lines and colour, with the exhibition lettering completing a particularly inviting design.
Picasso repeatedly returned to the great paintings of the past, treating them as starting points for invention. His sustained exploration of Manet’s composition began in 1959, producing paintings and drawings that reshaped its characters and setting in his own unmistakable language. This exhibition poster captures that conversation between two remarkable artists, made during Picasso’s lifetime.
