Picasso’s dove rises above a rainbow in this beautiful 1960 poster calling for peace and disarmament. The handwritten lettering gives the message a direct, personal quality, while the brilliant sweep of colour brings warmth to the uncluttered composition. Printed by Mourlot in Paris, it was created in connection with the planned Paris summit of May 1960.
The dove became one of Picasso’s most recognisable motifs through his involvement with the post-war peace movement. Alongside his paintings and sculpture, his posters allowed an immediately readable image to reach a much wider audience. Here, that simple symbol carries a hopeful message without losing the lively touch that makes his graphic work so appealing.
