Released in 1976, "Robin and Marian" is a romantic adventure directed by Richard Lester and starring Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Shaw, Nicol Williamson and Richard Harris. The film imagines an ageing Robin Hood returning to England after years of service to Richard the Lionheart, where he reunites with Marian and is drawn into one final confrontation with the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Written by James Goldman, the film offers a reflective and bittersweet variation on the familiar legend, replacing youthful heroics with themes of ageing, memory and enduring love. It marked Audrey Hepburn’s return to cinema after an eight-year absence, features a memorable John Barry score and has become admired as one of the most mature and emotionally resonant Robin Hood adaptations.
