Released in 1963, "The Prize" is a Cold War mystery thriller directed by Mark Robson and adapted by Ernest Lehman from Irving Wallace’s bestselling novel. Paul Newman stars as Andrew Craig, an irreverent, hard-drinking American novelist who travels to Stockholm to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature and becomes suspicious when a fellow laureate appears to have been replaced by an impostor. Elke Sommer and Edward G. Robinson co-star.
Blending espionage, romance and sophisticated comedy, the film has often been compared with the international thrillers of Alfred Hitchcock. Newman’s charismatic performance, the Stockholm setting and Jerry Goldsmith’s early score give the picture considerable period appeal, while the elaborate conspiracy plot makes it a particularly entertaining example of polished 1960s studio filmmaking.
This original US one-sheet was issued for the film’s 1963 theatrical release.
