Released in 1950, "The Second Face" is an American romantic drama directed by Jack Bernhard and starring Ella Raines, Bruce Bennett and Rita Johnson. Raines plays a woman whose appearance and prospects are transformed following reconstructive surgery after a serious accident, forcing her to confront the way beauty, identity and social judgement shape the relationships around her.
The film belongs to a distinctive cycle of post-war melodramas concerned with reinvention and the psychological consequences of physical transformation. Its premise later echoed through other screen stories, while Ella Raines’ central performance gives the picture an unusual mixture of romance, suspense and social observation characteristic of independent productions from the period.
This original US one-sheet poster was issued for the film’s original 1950 theatrical release through Eagle-Lion Classics.
