Released in 1956, "Wicked as They Come" is a British film noir directed by Ken Hughes and starring Arlene Dahl, Philip Carey and Herbert Marshall. Dahl plays Kathy Allen, an ambitious woman who escapes a difficult upbringing and uses beauty, charm and calculated deception to climb through London and Paris society, leaving a trail of betrayed men and dangerous consequences behind her.
Based on Bill S. Ballinger’s novel "Portrait in Smoke", the film blends melodrama, crime and noir-style fatalism around a striking femme-fatale performance from Dahl. Produced in Britain for Columbia Pictures, it has endured as a vivid example of 1950s transatlantic noir, notable for its glossy European settings and unusually hard-edged portrait of social ambition.
