Released in 1959, "Third Man on the Mountain" is a Walt Disney alpine adventure directed by Ken Annakin and starring Michael Rennie, James MacArthur, Janet Munro, James Donald and Herbert Lom. MacArthur plays Rudi Matt, a young Swiss climber determined to conquer the dangerous mountain that claimed his father’s life and prove himself to the experienced mountaineers around him.
Based on James Ramsey Ullman’s Newbery Honor novel "Banner in the Sky", the film was shot amid spectacular Alpine scenery and is admired for its authentic climbing sequences. It remains one of Disney’s strongest live-action adventures of the 1950s and an important early screen depiction of the golden age of mountaineering.
This original US one-sheet was issued for the film’s original 1959 theatrical release by Buena Vista Distribution. Its dramatic illustrated design emphasises the scale and danger of the ascent.
