Based on the 1982 manga of the same name, the groundbreaking animation Akira was released in 1988. At the time of its release it was the most expensive anime of all time.
This stunning poster from 1987 is from the original promotion for the film in advance of its release in Japan. Featuring Shōtarō in the central position, the design embodies the incredible post-apocalyptic and cyberpunk styling of the film.
