Fear Strikes Out

Released in 1957, "Fear Strikes Out" is a biographical sports drama directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Anthony Perkins and Karl Malden. Perkins portrays Boston Red Sox outfielder Jimmy Piersall, whose athletic promise is complicated by the relentless expectations of his father and an escalating mental-health crisis that threatens both his career and personal life.

Adapted from Piersall’s autobiography, the film was Robert Mulligan’s feature directorial debut and one of the earliest major Hollywood dramas to address mental illness within the world of professional sport. The emotionally intense performances by Perkins and Malden helped establish the film as an enduring baseball biography, while its candid treatment of psychological pressure remains central to its reputation.
