This original exhibition poster was produced for Jasper Johns at Dayton's Gallery 12 in Minneapolis in 1971. Featuring the colourful False Start image, the design combines expressive marks with stencilled words, creating a brilliant example of the artist's interest in colour, language and the way we read an image.
Jasper Johns became a major figure in American art through his paintings and prints of flags, numbers and other familiar signs. His work invites us to look again at images we think we know, exploring the relationship between an object, its representation and the language around it.
