This original 1966 poster was created to promote the world light-heavyweight championship fight between José Torres and Wayne Thornton at Shea Stadium in New York. Held on 21 May, the fight saw Torres retain his title with a unanimous decision after fifteen rounds. The brilliant artwork by LeRoy Neiman gives the two fighters the colourful, energetic treatment for which his sporting work is so well known.
American artist LeRoy Neiman was celebrated for his vividly coloured, expressive paintings of sport and entertainment. A regular presence at ringside and on the sidelines, he captured the movement and atmosphere of events rather than simply recording the action. Boxing became one of his best-known subjects, making this design a wonderful example of the work that brought him such a wide following.
