Released internationally in the mid-1950s, "Knave of Hearts" is a British-French comedy drama directed by René Clément and starring Gérard Philipe, Valerie Hobson, Joan Greenwood, Margaret Johnston and Natasha Parry. Philipe plays André Ripois, a charming Frenchman living in London whose serial affairs and elaborate seduction techniques are exposed as he pursues Patricia, a friend of his estranged wife.
Adapted from Louis Hémon’s novel "M. Ripois et la Némésis", the film combines romantic comedy with a sharper portrait of vanity, manipulation and emotional consequence. Shot at Elstree Studios and on location around London, it was selected for the 1954 Cannes Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Prize, and remains an elegant example of post-war Anglo-French cinema.
This original US one-sheet poster, issued under the American release title "Lover Boy", was produced for the film’s original US theatrical campaign.
