Released in 1998, "Shakespeare in Love" is a romantic period comedy directed by John Madden and starring Joseph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Geoffrey Rush, Colin Firth, Judi Dench and Ben Affleck. Set in Elizabethan London, the fictional story imagines a creatively blocked young William Shakespeare falling in love with Viola de Lesseps, whose determination to perform on stage inspires the writing of "Romeo and Juliet."
Written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, the film became a major critical and commercial success. It won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Paltrow and Best Supporting Actress for Dench, and remains celebrated for its witty screenplay, lavish production design and playful interweaving of theatrical history with romantic invention.
