The Birdcage

Released in 1996, "The Birdcage" is a comedy directed by Mike Nichols, written by Elaine May and starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Hank Azaria and Calista Flockhart. Adapted from the French farce "La Cage aux Folles," it follows a gay couple who attempt to disguise their lively South Beach household when their son becomes engaged to the daughter of an ultraconservative senator.

The film was both a critical and commercial success, topping the North American box office and earning more than $185 million worldwide. Its ensemble won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast, and the film has remained a beloved modern comedy noted for its performances, rapid-fire humour and unusually prominent portrayal of LGBT family life in a major studio production.

This original US one-sheet was produced for the film’s first theatrical release in 1996.
