The Dark at the Top of the Stairs

Released in 1960, "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" is a family drama directed by Delbert Mann and adapted from William Inge’s acclaimed stage play. Robert Preston and Dorothy McGuire star as Rubin and Cora Flood, a troubled Oklahoma couple whose marriage is strained by unemployment, pride and emotional distance. Eve Arden, Angela Lansbury, Shirley Knight and Lee Kinsolving appear in key supporting roles.

The film received notable awards recognition, including an Academy Award nomination for Shirley Knight and Golden Globe attention for both Knight and Kinsolving. Mann’s restrained direction and the screenplay by Harriet Frank Jr. and Irving Ravetch preserve the play’s intimate examination of fear, prejudice, adolescence and family instability, making it one of the more serious American domestic dramas of its era.

This original US one-sheet was issued for the film’s 1960 theatrical release by Warner Bros. The evocative ensemble artwork makes it a strong original poster for an important screen adaptation of Inge’s work.
