Released in 1982, "The Verdict" is a courtroom drama directed by Sidney Lumet from David Mamet’s screenplay, based on the novel by Barry Reed. Paul Newman gives one of his most acclaimed performances as Frank Galvin, an alcoholic Boston lawyer who sees a medical-malpractice case as his final opportunity for professional and personal redemption. Charlotte Rampling, Jack Warden, James Mason and Milo O’Shea co-star.
Widely regarded as one of the finest legal dramas ever made, the film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Newman and Best Supporting Actor for Mason. Its restrained direction, morally complex screenplay and Newman’s deeply vulnerable performance have secured its lasting reputation as a major achievement of 1980s American cinema.
