Released in 1980, "The Competition" is a romantic drama directed by Joel Oliansky and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Amy Irving and Lee Remick. Set around an international classical-piano competition in San Francisco, the film follows gifted but discouraged pianist Paul Dietrich and rising performer Heidi Joan Schoonover as professional rivalry develops into a complicated romance.
The film combines the structure of a sports-style competition drama with the disciplined world of concert performance. Dreyfuss and Irving trained extensively to create convincing musical scenes, while Lalo Schifrin’s score and the picture’s detailed attention to rehearsal and performance give it an unusual authenticity. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Original Song.
