A pair of sunglasses reveals something deeply unsettling in this original 1988 poster for They Live. The close-up composition, sinister reflection and slashing title turn the film’s central idea into a wonderfully direct image. It is a superb piece of advertising for one of John Carpenter’s most distinctive films.
Roddy Piper plays a drifter who discovers that the world around him is hiding a very different reality. Carpenter blends science fiction, action and sharp social satire, using familiar streets and advertising to make the extraordinary feel uncomfortably close. The poster shares that approach, giving an everyday object an entirely new meaning.
