Kaneda stands against the restless cityscape of Neo-Tokyo in this original 1989 American poster for Akira. The towering red title and detailed illustration convey the scale and intensity of the film, while the Streamline Pictures credit connects the design to its early US release. It is a brilliant image from a landmark moment in animation.
Katsuhiro Otomo adapted his own manga into the 1988 film, building a densely imagined future of biker gangs, political unrest and extraordinary psychic power. The ambition of its animation and its richly textured city helped introduce a new international audience to Japanese cinema. This poster captures the rebellious energy at the centre of that world.
