The film marked a significant change of direction for Spielberg and became a major critical and commercial success. It received eleven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and acting nominations for Goldberg, Winfrey and Avery, and has endured as a powerful story of resilience, sisterhood and personal liberation.
